UNFORGETTABLE MAX Pedigree Analysis by Alan Porter

Alan Porter - "UNFORGETTABLE MAX, a graded stakes performing sprinter/miler, is a brother to dual classic winning Champion Afleet Alex. They are by the up-and-coming Northern Afleet, a son of Champion and highly successful sire, Afleet.

Unforgettable Max is a Mr. Prospector line stallion out of a Roberto line mare, and with only one cross of Northern Dancer, which will be in the fifth generation of his foals. With 17 stakes winners on a cross on an Afleet/Northern Dancer cross, Northern Dancer looks a good strain to bring in here. Afleet, did particularly well with mares descending from Northern Dancer through Nijinsky II, siring eight stakes winners on this cross. It could also be worth considering mares descending from Nijinsky II’s three-parts-brother, The Minstrel. Afleet and his sons also have stakes winners out of mares descending from Northern Dancer through Danzig, Lyphard, Vice Regent (sire of Deputy Minister), Topsider (a genetic relative to Nureyev, who is in Northern Afleet) and One For All. Afleet sired Northern Afleet, out of a mare by Nureyev. There are already 11 stakes winners with inbreeding to Nureyev, so breeding Unforgettable Max back over Nureyev line mares is also distinct possibility. Northern Dancer’s son, Sadler’s Wells is a three-parts-brother to Nureyev, and Kingmambo (bred on a similar Mr. Prospector/Nureyev cross to Northern Afleet) has done very well with mares carrying Sadler’s Wells. The most likely U.S. source of Sadler’s Wells are El Prado and King of Kings. There are some other Northern Dancer lines which have worked well under Mr. Prospector in general and could be worth considering, including Storm Cat, Dixieland Band and El Gran Senor.

Both Northern Afleet and Afleet have sired stakes winners out mares from the Halo branch of the Turn-to/Hail to Reason line, Northern Afleet getting a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Saint Ballado (brother to Devil’s Bag). Other sources of Halo include Halo’s Image, Jolie’s Halo, Lively One, Southern Halo and Sunny’s Halo.

Halo is a close genetic relative to Drone, and there is a stakes winner by a son of Afleet out of a mare by Drone. Unforgettable Max is out of a mare by a Roberto (by Hail to Reason, by Turn-to) line stallion. It can sometimes pay to breed back to the male line of the broodmare sire and there have already been three stakes winners, two graded, with Roberto inbreeding, so it could be worth trying a Roberto line horse. Roberto line sons include Lear Fan (out of a mare by Lt. Stevens, a brother to the granddam of Nureyev, and himself already broodmare sire of a stakes winner by Afleet), Dynaformer, Darby Creek Road, Sunshine Forever, Kris S. and Red Ransom. Afleet has also sired stakes winners out of mares descending from the Turn-to line through Cyane and his son, Smarten, and through Best Turn (sire of Cox’s Ridge).

Afleet and Northern Afleet have sired stakes winners out of mares descending from Bold Ruler through Reviewer, Spectacular Bid (by Bold Bidder) and Air Forbes Won (by Bold Forbes). Afleet does not have any stakes winners out of Seattle Slew line mares, but on pedigree this cross should work well. In general, Mr. Prospector line stallions have crossed well with Seattle Slew line mares, this cross producing more than 75 stakes winners. It could also be worth trying Bold Ruler through Secretariat.

Northern Afleet also has stakes winners out of mares descending from Bold Ruler’s sire, Nasrullah, through Naskra and Caro. Northern Afleet and Afleet have both sired stakes winners out of mares descending from Ribot through Tom Rolfe and Graustark.
Unforgettable Max is a Raise a Native line sire, but Northern Afleet and Afleet have sired stakes winners when bred back to mares from the Alydar and Majestic Prince branches of Raise a Native.

There are also stakes winners by Afleet and Northern Afleet out of mares descending from Damascus, Buckpasser, Prince John, Grey Dawn II and Noholme II/Nodouble."

“ He exudes strength… attractive, good bone, a great, flat knee, long sweeping stride”

 John Williams

“When I look at this horse, I think WOW! This is us – big, strong and athletic.  This is the kind of horse
we try to breed and definitely the kind of stallion we breed to.”
