Stonewall Stallions’ leading freshman sire Medaglia d’Oro enjoyed another great weekend from his first crop of runners, as debutantes Retraceable and Rachel Alexandra turned in big performances, winning a $250,000 stakes and placing in a Grade 3 stakes, respectively, on Nov. 1st.
Retraceable overcame having to race eight-wide on the far turn to power home a convincing 3 1/4-length winner in the $250,000 Princess Elizabeth S. for 2-year-old fillies at Woodbine. The final time over the local Polytrack was 1:44.76.
Trained by Mark Casse, Retraceable picked up her first stakes and became the third stakes winner for her sire. She moved her career earnings to $203,441 with her second win from four starts.
Rachel Alexandra was the favorite in the $100,000 Pocahontas S. (G3) for 2-year-old fillies at Churchill Downs and ran far from disgracefully. The promising filly was loaded for bear on the far turn but could not negotiate a clean path through when the field straightened for home. She was forced to hesitate and alter course long enough to lose momentum and yield the lead to eventual race winner Sara Louise.
Rachel Alexandra got rolling at the sixteenth pole and finished up nicely to be an unlucky second. Trained by Hal Wiggins, the Dolphus Morrison homebred improved her earnings to $101,452. She broke her maiden impressively at Churchill Downs and recently won a Keeneland allowance race, and she now owns a pair of runner-up efforts in top graded stakes at Churchill Downs.
