Fortunia, a 3-year-old, raised her game to a new level in the $200,000 Ouija Board H. (G3) at Lone Star Park on May 31, getting beat just a neck against a field of older, more experienced fillies and mares.

The Ouija Board, at one mile on the turf, was the stakes debut for the daughter of Leroidesanimaux. Fortunia, who is based in Texas with trainer Cash Asmussen, had performed well on the grass at the current meet, with a win and a second in her prior to starts. As is her normal style, she broke without urgency from the gate, and was still last of six with just a quarter mile to run. Tony McNeil swung her five wide at the top of the lane, and she responded willing, flying late to miss by just a neck to Wasted Tears.

The defeat was certainly no disgrace, as the winner, who is a 5-year-old, has won four graded stakes, including last year's Ouija Board, and 10 of 15 overall. The final time of the race was 1:33 1/5, just 2/5 off the track record. The outstanding effort earned Fortunia a 98 Beyer Speed Figure, easily a lifetime best.  She is now 2-2-0 in six starts, earning $64,518. She is owned by her breeder Janeen Oliver.

Fortunia is a half-sister to Dionisia, winner of the Group 1 Italian Oaks and seven other stakes in that country. She was named Italian champion filly at both age 2 and 3.
